Just because the festive season is approaching, healthy lifestyle habits don’t have to suffer.
In fact, with perhaps a bit more time on your hands and hopefully better weather, the Christmas period is the perfect time to get active and enjoy some healthy living.
Why wait till the New Year to make your resolutions? Keeping to your training plan at this time of year, or starting a new one, is great for self-esteem as well as your physical health.
Work off those Christmas excesses
A bit of exercise every day can help combat the effects of Christmas excesses. This doesn’t mean you can eat the whole Christmas pudding! However, getting regular exercise will allow you to feel guilt-free about the odd mince pie or glass of sherry.
Have fun with family, or time out
Exercise can be a fun thing to do with the family, or a great way to escape from them! So do whatever you feel like - a brisk walk, a swim in the sea, a game of touch on the beach or a visit to the gym.
The benefits of summer exercise
Getting in some physical activity over summer will help you feel so much better by:
- increasing your energy levels
- reducing stress
- improving your sleep
- promoting a healthy body weight.
Of course, it will also reduce your risk of heart disease, osteoporosis, type II diabetes and certain types of cancer, not to mention lowering your blood pressure and cholesterol and strengthening your heart and lungs. What’s more, it’s fun!
No gym? No worries!
If you can’t get to the gym or do other aspects of your regular training, don’t give up.
Outdoor games are an excellent opportunity to get involved and remain physically active. This will help you maintain muscle strength and endurance, plus it’s a great way to exercise and have fun at the same time.
Try getting active on your way to places. Instead of driving to work, give walking or cycling a go! This is a great way to get extra value out of your journey and get two things done at once.
Pick an activity you enjoy, or will get satisfaction from, and go for it. If you get bored, try something new. Time flies when you’re having fun!
